Diet Don’ts for Healthy Weight Loss

As important as it is to get a handle on your love handles, it’s even more important to lose weight the right way.

Lots of people get started on a diet with one goal in mind: quick, visible results both on the scale and in the mirror. But if they don’t prioritize such long-term goals as improved health and weight management, those results won’t last for long.

Healthy weight loss is about making smart, profound lifestyle changes that are maintainable over the long haul.

It’s a far cry from the misconceptions often associated with the word “diet,” which rely on Herculean efforts to slash calories (to sometimes ridiculous lows) any way possible.

At best, such diets are unsustainable. Beyond that, they’re ineffective, and at worst, dangerous.

As tempting as it is to take shortcuts, it’s necessary to stay on the main drag in order to preserve and improve health and see real benefits. Doing things like skipping meals to save calories, fasting, or relying on questionable weight loss products that make too-good-to-be-true claims is just not going to get you where you want to go.

Your employees need to know as much as possible about effective and healthy weight-loss strategies up front, before they take misguided steps that will thwart their efforts or even harm their health.

Help them avoid such pitfalls with tips such as these from WebMD’s “Things You Should Never Do to Lose Weight”:

  • Starvation, fasting, or very low-calorie diets. Don’t cut calories below 1,200 per day; otherwise you will struggle to meet nutrient needs, fuel activity, and satisfy hunger.
  • Dubious supplements and over-the-counter diet pills that make grand promises. These are unlikely to be effective, and they’re not necessarily safe or capable of delivering on their claims.
  • Cleanses or detox plans. Cleanses cause weight loss from water and stool weight, at best, but they can be dangerous and carry risks of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and more.
  • Obsessive behaviors such as extreme exercising. Extreme exercise is physically intense on the body, causing severe wear and tear and increasing the risk for injury, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance.
