Fitness: The Perfect Fit

Like a good pair of running shoes, exercise has to be a proper fit.

Any kind of workout needs to be custom-designed for the exerciser in order for them to stick with it … which is, of course, the key to success.

Gym workouts aren’t for everyone. Neither are walking groups. Or biking or hiking, or anything that requires time outside the comfort of one’s own home.

If you have employees like this on your staff, never fear: Exercise comes in many forms.

People who don’t like to venture far from home or work have a variety of options when it comes to working out (making their excuses futile). From fitness equipment such as stationary bikes, elliptical machines, and treadmills to a simple jump rope and some floor space, home workout tools can be customized to fit any person, any schedule, any space.

For a gym experience without the gym, people can opt to follow a virtual personal trainer via one of the countless exercise DVDs or game system programs on the market.

Picking the pace and the setting for exercise offers an appealing element of control. And when your employees are comfortable with those things, they’re more likely to stay committed to getting in shape.

In fact, a good home workout plan is a handy alternative for those who prefer to exercise outside the home, too, on days when weather, time constraints, or other factors rule out their normal routine.

As for the office, you can make it convenient for your workers to fit some physical activity into their day by setting aside an empty office as a fitness room.

It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate; a yoga mat and some hand weights are better than nothing. If there’s room in your wellness program budget, spring for a treadmill or stationary bike.

The key is to answer every anti-exercise excuse with a solution. Before long, even your most reluctant staffers will likely come around.
